Student-Centred Teaching

Student-Centred Teaching or Student-Centred Learning is a term which has been around for a number of years now. I do not know who coined the term but I have found publications which use it dated back to the 1990’s.

It is not a methodology but rather an approach which moves the focus from the teacher to the learner. Most teachers come across this in their pre-service training and expand on it as they move through their careers.

At the most basic level, it involves learners working in pairs or groups. However, Student-Centred Teaching does not have to be limited to activities but can go overall into other areas of the curriculum: from syllabus design to goals and materials.

This is video looks at SLT and considers what is it, where it has come from and where it is going.
